Periodate salts decompose due to poor washing

Some periodate salts which were bagged up for disposal, unexpecedly decomposed. Investigation showed that the autocatalytic decompositon initiated was due to the presence of contaiminents (the salts were insufficiently washed). The original hazard assessment was carried out on well washed material.
