Explosion of waste bottle

Incident

A Winchester bottle containing titration washes exploded under pressure - spilling contents (~80% full) from fume cupboard onto floor

The Investigation

The washes were found to comprise various aqueous liquors containing Sodium Tetrathionate, Potassium Iodide, Methanol, Hydrochloric acid. Any reaction liberating gases were not foreseen.

Follow Up

All waste solutions are now stored in plastic bottles fitted with pressure relieving caps.
