Overcooling acetic mixture causes explosion on warm up

CrO3 added in portions to Acetic acid/anhydride mix with substrate. On warming up mixture erupted from flask. As this was a scale up the chemist had used extra cooling to control the exotherm, but had part froze the mixture, when it melted, it found the CrO3, and the rest, as they say, is history...
