The Incident

A strong smell and a trail of vermiculite in a fridge was traced to a tin which had contained a 5ml bottle of trichlorosilane. Although the bottle was intact it was empty. It is thought that the bottle contents had leaked into the vermiculite and reaction had occurred to build up pressure. As a consequence the (unopened) tin had exploded. Inspection of the tin showed that the top and bottom had bulged out prior to explosion. As it was a ring pull type tin it had ruptured fairly easily and there was relatively little damage to the neighbouring materials.
