The Incident

Numerous minor incidents in which small vials have exploded in microwave ovens have been reported

The Investigation

Usually with damage to the oven interior only has been observed - it has been seen that the usual problem is that the vials have been closed (to prevent loss of solvent)

Conclusions

The use of technology seems to blind people to the fact that heating liquids in sealed containers will cause pressure - which is probably enough to burst/explode the container!

Lessons Learnt

It has to be clearly shown to the staff, by means of suitable training, and probably suitable labelling of the equipment the dangers of closing these vials and overheating.
